Use Weather Routing on the Live Map

In partnership with NAPA.

Our Weather Routing service allows you to take weather conditions into account when planning a vessel's journey, in order to minimize costs, spent on fuel.

Additionally, the optimization includes target speed, arrival time, engine load, Draught status, different fuel types and canals routing and max wave height restrictions.

Clicking on the Weather Routing icon on the Live Map Toolbar, you are able to use the tool.

If you don’t need the toolbar and want more space to work on the Map, click on the arrow on the top right to hide it, while remaining in the Weather Routing tool. To reopen simply click on the Weather Routing icon again.

This article contains the following sections:

 

Setting up the route

The steps you need to follow are:

  1. Select the subject vessel
  2. Select origin, typing the port name of clicking on the Live Map for specific coordinates. Please keep in mind that clicking on the respective field, the last updated vessel’s position and current destination port are available for use.
  3. Select the destination, as above.
  4. Update the SETTINGS (ETD, Speed, Draught, Crossing Canals, Max wave height) according to your preferences 
  5. Select the BUNKERS (considered different fuel types in ECA / non-ECA) used for this vessel. 
  6. Click on the CALCULATE button.

Results

Upon filling in all the mandatory fields, you will be able to click on the CALCULATE button in order to kick-off the optimization process.

Once the optimisation is finished, two routes (the Shortest in red and the Optimised in blue) will be presented in both map and left panel. The two lines presented on the map follow the same colour coding as the pills in the left panel. The red and blue pills will contain:

  • total distance
  • duration
  • consumption 
  • CO2 emissions

NOTE: If any of the values entered in the required fields is not valid, the field will be in error state and the CALCULATE button will remain inactive.

NOTE: If the optimization calculation fails for any reason, a failure message will be displayed.

For each pill, you can:

1) Go from the overview mode to the detail-view mode, by simply clicking on the title of the route (Shortest or Optimised) to see the predictive ETD and a table with breakdown of consumption in ECA/non-ECA and totals.

Click on a pill to see a line on the map, that represents the route, with the waypoints. The more you zoom in the line, the more waypoints you will see. Hover over a waypoint to see the respective waypoint info-window with the details:

  • waypoint number
  • lat/lon
  • bathymetry
  • weather details at position at the specific projected timestamp
  • weather data source indication at the bottom of the info-window

2) Export a report in pdf format for a specific route by clicking on the export icon.

The report is split in two sections. While the first page is an overview of the routes, with the selected one standing out based on line width, the second section is a grid table with each position, and every detail available for that position. Specific mentioning exists in the waypoints that are part of a port or canal passage. When depth 20 meters, Wind 7 Beaufort, or waves 4 meters, the respective data is highlighted to raise attention to the captain.

NOTE: The weather maps timeline is supported by our Weather Maps service and, as such, it supports 3-days forecast for the wind barbs layer and 7-days for all other layers.

 

Change Voyage Parameters

There are four points of attention regarding recalculating a Weather Route:

1) Clear Voyage

By clicking on the Clear Voyage option and confirming this action, all settings, except for the selected vessel, will be reset.

2) Change Vessel

By choosing a new vessel, all settings will be reset the same way as above.

3) Changes in Origin/Destination/Settings/Bunkers

If you change anything in Origin/Destination/Settings/Bunkers, the pills and routes on the map are removed and the CALCULATE button switches to active so you may calculate the route with the new selections. 

4) Voyage storage and persistence

On one hand, the system automatically stores in the database the last voyage calculation per vessel, in order for you to recalculate the next day with the updated weather forecast. This means that even if you log from another computer, you will retrieve the voyage as was last calculated.

On the other hand, all your selections and input are stored in the local storage of the user to ensure persistence as you move around the system. Meaning that if you clean your browser cache or go to another computer, these selections/input will be lost.

5) Recalculate route

Each time you enable the Weather Routing or Calculate a routing, the system checks if there is a new weather forecast available at NAPA (a newer is available daily at 15:00 UTC), since the last time you calculated a voyage. If there is a new forecast, a snack bar is shown to inform you about it and gives you the option to Recalculate. The snack bar will stay on for 10 seconds, but the CALCULATE button will remain as Re-calculate (with an explanation text above it) until you recalculate the voyage.

If you change vessel, the check is re-run for the selected vessel's last saved voyage. Whenever you re-calculate the voyage, the origin position is changed to reflect the latest received position of the vessel, and the ETD is changed to the timestamp of that latest position. If that position's timestamp is more than 3 hours ago, a snack bar will warn you.

5) Revert to last saved voyage

Whenever you select the Reset Voyage option, the last stored voyage is restored. You will be asked to validate this option.
