out of date info
AnsweredCan you please tell me why, sometimes the info on some individual ships on the live map are marked as been received ten, twelve, seventeen hours or more ago.

Dear Thomas,
Thank you for contacting us.
As a basic user you have access to positions recorded by our network of terrestrial stations for free. We are glad to say that we have the largest network of it's kind in the world!
When you do not see updated positions and get the message "out of range", then the vessel is far away from terrestrial stations and can only be tracked via satellite. This is only available to subscribers of our satellite plans or Sat Add-ons.
Could you please be kind enough to provide specific examples of vessels with no updated positions?
Let me know if you detect such vessels in a specific area so as for me to check the coverage of the respective area.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Best regards, -
Further to Thalia's answer, our local RNLI lifeboat was out on exercises this morning and has been back in the boathouse with all electrical systems powered down since lunchtime. It is still showing as Rnli lifeboat D-703 at N55.47 W-01.57. The pop-up when the cursor is hovered over the vessel icon is alternating between position received 6hrs 59min ago and position received 7hrs 0min ago. The time since position received is not incrementing when the display refreshes.

Hello John,
As far as I can see the latest position received for this vessel was on 2016-11-27 10:52 UTC via terrestrial means.
On that date you have received 4 positions for this vessel:

Let us know if the AIS transponder is currently switched on.
I look forward to hearing from you.

I don't think the current position of a vessel is the issue. I think what interests Thomas MacKenzie and myself is why the chart continues to show a vessel in a position from which it last reported many hours ago. For example, our lifeboat was still shown on the chart at about 09:00 GMT today which is 22 hours after you last received its position. After what length of time without a report does Marine Traffic remove a vessel from the chart.
This can actually have a safety implication as we often see fishing boats on the chart off our coast with positions last reported many hours ago. We have no way of knowing whether the boat has moved away or has actually got into trouble.

You say in your last post that the last reported position of the vessel stays on the map for 24 hours. Our inshore lifeboat was last out on exercise on Saturday 31/12/16 and has been in the lifeboat house and powered down since about lunchtime on that day. However, it is still showing on the map and when I hover the cursor over the vessel it reports the position as received 3 days and 20 hours ago. When will the outdated position be removed from the map, please?
