    Hello Jacqui,

Thank you for contacting MarineTraffic Support.
I am Alexa, Customer Support Representative at MarineTraffic and I will be glad to help you with our services.

Have checked on the vessels, I can indeed see that their dimensions are huge.
However, kindly allow me to share that the dimension that we display for the vessels including the icon size are derived from the information that we receive from the vessel's AIS transponder.
You may also find this information here:
    https://help.marinetraffic.com/hc/en-us/articles/205426887-What-kind-of-information-is-AIS-transmitted-

With this in mind, kindly allow me to clarify that the only way to correct this is for the vessel owners to update this information in their transponder so as for us to receive the correct information and display it on the vessels details page.

I hope this helps clarify how this works and if there is anything else I can further help you with, please do not hesitate to let me know and I will be more than happy to help you.

    Kind regards,

    Alexa

    Thanks Alexa,

I'm co-owner of Hummingbird of Hamble and confirm that our AIS is definitely not transmitting length and breadth information - the data fields are blank.

We updated the dimensions on the 'Contribute to this page' part of your website a few months ago but this is not being reflected online. The dimensions are LOA 11.98 metres x Beam 6.9 metres.

Regarding vessel Yasmine - I also confirm that there was no vessel with a LOA of 586 metres in Hamble River yesterday - it would have completely taken over the entire marina! Seems like some form of LOA reasonableness check is required in the software?

    Thanks Jacqui

    Hi Alexa,

Just a follow up to confirm the status of this - the length of Hummingbird of Hamble is still showing incorrectly. Is your team addressing this?

    Many thanks, Jacqui

    Hello Jacqui,

    Thank you for your email.

Upon checking, I can see that the vessel's dimension has now been updated in the vessel's Wiki here:

However, I would like to share that the information as shown here:

can only be updated through the vessel's AIS transponder.

I can understand though that, as you have mentioned, the vessel does not have a field to edit the said information.

As such, I have raised this to our team and from what they have shared with me, this could be the default factory setting of the vessel's transponder.

Furthermore, they have checked the data transmitted by the vessel and confirmed that this is the information she transmits.

As such, even if we change this to the correct one, the signal we receive from the vessel would still override the change and display the incorrect dimension.

I hope this helps and if there is anything else I can hep you with, please do not hesitate to let me know. I will be more than happy to assist you.

    Kind regards,

    Alexa

    Thanks Alexa,

We've input our vessel's dimensions into the relevant fields in our AIS transponder and MarineTraffic is now showing these correctly. As per my earlier message, these dimension fields were previously blank, were not incorrect on Vessel Finder or on an independent third party's Chart Plotter. Therefore the source of the incorrect improbable dimensions on MarineTraffic will remain a mystery!

    Kind regards, Jacqui
