    Hello Darren,

    Thank you for contacting us.

From what you are describing, I understand that there is an updated position received for your vessel via Satellite, so your vessel icon is displayed as Tug.

At this point I would like to inform you that all MarineTraffic users have access to positions recorded by our network of terrestrial stations. We are glad to say that we have the largest network of its kind in the world!
When you do not see updated positions and get the message "out of range", then the vessel is far away from terrestrial stations and can only be tracked via satellite.

In our attempt to provide you with a clear overview of the global traffic, we display the vessels with Satellite positions as anonymised so as for anyone to access the Satellite positions.

If you want to receive the most updated positions for your vessel, then you may consider the option of the Sat Flex service:

Keep in mind that this service is available for a 3-day trial in order for you to test it further. Learn how to start your trial here:

I will be happy to assist you with any further needs you may have.

    Kind regards,
